Our Chinese coffee is grown in the Yunnan region on a family-run farm which has been growing coffee for over 20 years for global companies such as Nestle and Starbucks. They have been focusing on speciality coffee for the last 5 years and are committed to producing quality beans. The family are highly respected in the local community, helping many villagers with education and healthcare in this remote area of Southwest China.
French missionaries first brought coffee seeds to Yunnan in the 1890’s where the geographic and climatic conditions are similar to those of Indonesia and part of Colombia. Modern coffee cultivation only began in earnest in 1988 in a programme involving the Chinese government, the World Bank and the United Nations Development Programme. Speciality coffee growing only commenced around 2009 and is currently a tiny percentage of the volume grown, but this is fast changing.
